Article 4 AI Act training

Article 4 of the EU AI Act requires providers and deployers of AI systems to take measures to support the AI literacy of their staff. It does not prescribe a specific course, a certificate or a minimum number of hours.

The text of Article 4 (as amended in 2026)

Providers and deployers of AI systems shall take measures to support the development of AI literacy of their staff and other persons dealing with the operation and use of AI systems on their behalf, taking into account their technical knowledge, experience, education and training and the context the AI systems are to be used in, and considering the persons or groups of persons on whom the AI systems are to be used.

The article adds that this obligation does not require providers or deployers to guarantee any specific level of AI literacy of any individual.

What that means in practice

  • Measures should fit the tools used and the people affected.
  • A general training can be one of those measures.
  • Keeping a simple record of what was done helps you show your approach.
  • High-risk uses need more than general training.
